KEN Activities 2000-2007

June 2000

  • June 7th - Kenneth James Derminer had a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and died while at a football mini camp from an undetected heart defect.

July 2000

  • Kids Endangered Now (K.E.N) Heart Foundation was created with the goal discovering how many teenagers have cardiac arrests and die from an undetected heart defect.

August 2000

  • KEN partners up with Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) and starts a campaign for Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation Form (PPE).

October 2000

  • KEN starts a National Database of SCA in school age children.
  • October 3rd – KEN is incorporated.
  • KEN hosts it first fundraiser to purchase External Heart Defibrillators (AED)

December 2000

  • KEN and SCA in youth; is published in USA Today.

April 2001

  • KEN makes a presentation to Cuyahoga Fall Hospital on SCA.
  • KEN partners up with Cuyahoga Fall Hospital and offers free EKG’s and blood pressure screenings with physicals to high school athletes.

August 2001

  • Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) reforms the PPE Form.
  • KEN and PPE reform is published in the Cincinnati Enquirer, LA Times, USA Today, Lake County News Herald, and Ashtabula Star Beacon.
  • KEN teams up with Dr. Gordon; of Akron University Hospital; to begin a campaign for AED placement.

October 2001

  • KEN, PPE reform and defibrillation is published in the Managing School Athletics Manual.
  • Geneva High School receives an AED donated by Medtronic’s in Ken’s memory.
  • KEN hosts a fundraiser to purchase AED.

March 2002

  • KEN is published in the Journal of Emergency Medical Services (JEMS) Magazine.
  • The National Center for Early Defibrillation (NCED) publishes KEN in the Saving Lives in Schools publication.
  • KEN is published in Medtronic School AED Implementation Guide.

May 2002

  • KEN makes presentation to Mantua school district, Barberton school district, Jefferson school district, Grand Valley school district, Buckeye school district, Madison school district, and Geneva Rotary Club to educate about AED placement.
  • Geneva Rotary Club purchases six AED; one for each school in the Geneva School District and one for each city police vehicle - for a total of 16 AED.

October 2002

  • KEN hosts a fundraiser to purchase AEDs.

May 2003

  • KEN meets with State Representative Sharrod Brown and Doctor Terry Gordon at Akron University Hospital to discuss mandatory AED legislation for schools.

August 2003

  • KEN presents 2 AEDs to Geneva Little League, 1 to Geneva Midget League Football, and 1to Ashtabula Little League.

November 2003

  • KEN speaks at Cleveland’s American Heart Associations Annual Gala; raises $25,000.00 for AEDs for the Cleveland Area City School District.
  • KEN hosts a fundraiser to purchase AED.

May 2004

  • KEN presents an AED to Ashtabula Midget League Football and Kingsville Little League.

June 2004

  • KEN escort’s 5 families to witness Governor Taft sign a bill that appropriated 2.5 million dollars to fund purchases of AEDs for Ohio Schools that KEN and Doctor Gordon campaigned for.
  • KEN hosts a fundraiser to purchase AEDs

July 2004

  • KEN co founds National Cardiac Parent Network (NCPN).

August 2004

  • KEN presents two AEDs to the Ashtabula YMCA.

October 2004

  • KEN’s web site is used as a resource for the Duracell TV commercial that included Zoll defibrillators.
  • KEN hosts a fundraiser to purchase AED.

November 2004

  • KEN receives a grant from the Brandon Williams Memorial Fund to purchase of four AEDs.
  • KEN presents Mentor School District with 4 AEDs, purchased with a grant received from the Brandon Williams Memorial Fund.

December 2004

  • KEN and the Kathryn Rose Party Center Host a New Years dinner/dance to raise proceeds for operating expenses.

February 2005

  • KEN receives a grant from US BANK.

April 2005

  • KEN interviews with Wall Street Journal about PPE reform, Cardiac Screenings, AED placement and our National Database.

June 2005

  • KEN presents 2 AEDs to Chief Bruckman of the G-O-T-L Police Dept., 1 to Geneva State Park and 1 to St. John & Paul Catholic School.

July 2005

  • KEN hosts a fundraiser to create a free cardiac screening program for children athletes.
  • KEN has an AED SAVE at the Ashtabula YMCA – male victim collapsed in the pool, Lifeguard uses AED to restart victim’s heart.

August 2005

  • KEN receives a Five Star Volunteer Award from US BANK donated on behalf of Lisa Bruckman our Fundraising Coordinator.

October 2005

  • KEN has an AED save at G-O-T-L!  Police Chief uses AED to save a choking victim at a fundraiser.  Heart was not in arrest- shock was not administered.
  • KEN is published in the Athletic Business Magazine and our Database is hosted on Athletic Business Magazine web site.

January 2006

  • KEN hosts weekly Bingo to purchase defibrillators, and create a free cardiac screening for children athletes.
  • KEN helped develop the Parent Heart Watch; becoming a national voice to empower families who have lost children to SCA; providing leadership skills and training for defibrillation and  improve  heart screenings.
  • KEN along with the Parent Heart Watch hosted 40 families from 30 states to the inaugural Parent Heart Watch conference in Las Vegas with a grant from the Medtronic Foundation.
  • KEN works with the National Athletic Trainers Association to publish a training video on their web site. www.nata.org/signatures

February 2006

  • KEN and the Parent Heart Watch is represented at the National Summit Against Sudden Death In Athletes at the University of Mississippi, Governor of Mississippi declared Sudden Cardiac Awareness week.
  • KEN and the Parent Heart Watch hosted a seminar to the Texas Medical Transcribers Association concerning SCA in children.

May 2006

  • KEN along with the Parent Heart Watch attends the Heart Rhythm Society’s National Conference along with twelve thousand physicians; to spread awareness about SCA in children.
  • KEN donates an AED to St. John High School in Delphos, Ohio

January 2007

  • KEN donated an AED to Perry Recreation Center

March 2007

  • Ashtabula Fire Department Donates $1000.00 to KEN

June 2007

  • KEN Donates AED to Ashtabula DJFS
  • KEN/ PHW Donates AED to Lord Wedgewood Stop Heart Attack
